The new points based system, Making Migration Work for Britain, is due to replace both the Work Permit Scheme and the Highly Skilled Migrant Program. Below follows a brief description of the five categories of applicants:

Tier 1- designed to bring into the UK those migrants with the very highest skills. They do not need a job offer and will have unrestricted access to the labour market. A migrant who enters under Tier 1 will not need a sponsor under the new system. Tier 1 will replace the current highly skilled migrant programme.
Tier 2 - Skilled workers with job offer. Tier 2 is for those skilled workers who have received ajob offer from a UK employer. Their attractiveness to the UK is demonstrated by the fact that a UK employer wants to take them on.
